We humans tend to identify the body with the self and to judge one another by appearances. Knowing how body image affects the opinions others, we learn to recognize early in life which body types are acceptable and which are not, in our pursuit of personal attractiveness and desirability. 

     We perceive our body weight as important because we do have some degree of control over it. Yet this aspect of self-image usually dissatisfies most of us in some way. As a result, we have a conflict in social values around issues of eating and gaining weight. Eating disorders, from anorexia to obesity, are becoming epidemic as we struggle with this conflict. Having become acclimated to their condition, some obese people develop feelings of denial and self-rejection, therefore limiting their pursuit of solutions to the weight problem.
